Content Management Tools

Maintaining your site can be a hassle—you want your content to be fresh, but you don't want to pay update fees every month. Unfortunately, most content management tools are more complicated than they are worth. They try to be everything to everybody, and thus become too complex for the average newbie to master easily. Still, the concept is a good one.

We recommend for small projects, people request their designer to work with a programmer (if they don't program themselves) to develop a simple content management system that will let them update the parts of their site they need to, but to forgo the larger systems like Drupal or Mambo. They are overkill for most brochure-ware sites. The only exception is if you are using a blog or a wiki or another specialized content management system and it really does meet your needs pretty well.

If you are building an online store, make sure the system you are using will let you add and update text pages as well as products. The more information you can provide your customers the better.

Using pre-made templates can cut your headaches tremendously.
